Socceroos winger Awer Mabil has signed a three-year contract with Melbourne City, marking a significant recruitment win for the A-League Men club.
The 30-year-old, who left Adelaide United in 2015, has spent over a decade playing abroad. His most recent stint was with Spanish club Castellon, where his form earned him a recall to the Socceroos squad ahead of the World Cup. He played the majority of his overseas games at Danish club Midtjylland.
International Experience and World Cup Pedigree
Mabil brings Champions League and Europa League experience and has appeared at the past two World Cups. He has scored 10 goals in 39 international appearances.
“After spending more than a decade playing in Europe, I’m really excited to be coming home to Australia and beginning this new journey with Melbourne City,” Mabil said.
“Following Australian football from afar in recent years, it’s impossible not to be impressed by what Melbourne City has built. The ambition, the standards and the success the club has achieved made this an opportunity I really wanted to be part of.”
Role in Socceroos and Community Impact
Mabil came off the bench in Australia’s Round of 16 loss to Egypt at the World Cup, scoring his spot-kick in the penalty shootout. He also played a key leadership role, mentoring young players like Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure.
The former refugee has been an advocate for multiculturalism, stating during the World Cup that the Socceroos represented a modern, multicultural Australia.
City's Recruitment Drive
Mabil joins fellow Socceroos Aziz Behich and Mathew Leckie at City, who are aiming to improve on last season’s elimination-final exit.

Other Socceroos Moves
Mabil’s move follows that of Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine, who completed a transfer from FC St. Pauli to J1 League club Cerezo Osaka. Irvine, who was captain at St. Pauli, expressed excitement about joining the Japanese club.
“I’m incredibly excited to be coming to the hottest football nation in the world and joining a new league and a club with huge potential,” Irvine said. “I hope I can use my experience and quality to help the team become even better.”
In other news, young talent Nestory Irankunda is expected to join Portuguese giants Sporting CP from Championship club Watford.
