The Garma Festival is underway at Gulkula in north-east Arnhem Land this weekend, running until Monday and drawing thousands of delegates from around the country.
Australia's largest Indigenous cultural gathering is organised by the Yothu Yindi Foundation. The 2026 theme is Bukmak, which means “everyone”. In the Yolŋu Matha language, garma describes a two-way learning process, recognising that everyone has knowledge to share and respecting difference and exchange.
