Amazon has launched Alexa+ in Australia today in Early Access, marking its biggest AI upgrade to the voice assistant. The new Alexa+ is designed to move beyond simple command-and-response interactions to become a conversational personal assistant that remembers user preferences and understands the way Australians actually speak.
According to Amazon, Alexa+ can remember things about you, understand local expressions, and carry out complex tasks without needing step-by-step instructions. For example, users can ask, "Hey Alexa, play that Harry Styles song about fruit," and it will identify "Watermelon Sugar." Similarly, asking about "that new Ryan Gosling movie where he's in space" will lead to Project Hail Mary, which can be played on compatible Fire TV devices.
Understanding Aussie slang
Amazon's Australian engineers, linguists, and speech scientists have spent years teaching Alexa+ to understand local vocabulary. The assistant now comprehends terms like "arvo," "servo," "snags," and "bottlo" without treating them as foreign words.
This natural language understanding extends to memory. Unlike most voice assistants that start each interaction from scratch, Alexa+ remembers previous conversations, preferences, and shared details. For instance, if you tell Alexa+, "Sarah's coming over for dinner Saturday night. Can you help me find something to cook?" it will recall that Sarah is pescatarian and suggest suitable recipes.
Practical assistance in daily life
Alexa+ can also make restaurant bookings through OpenTable and send confirmation emails to guests with time, venue, and reservation details. Shopping becomes easier with price monitoring: users can say, "Let me know when the Ninja blender drops below $150," and Alexa+ will notify them and complete the purchase upon verbal approval.
For families, Alexa+ includes voice-activated PIN protection to prevent accidental purchases by children. Smart home control is more intuitive, such as saying "It's dark" to turn on lights, and music can follow users from room to room with commands like "Alexa, move the music here."
Home security and visual assistance
Alexa+ integrates with Ring cameras, allowing users to ask, "Did any packages get delivered today?" and receive analysis of footage. It can also show camera feeds to check on pets while at work. A futuristic feature lets users ask Alexa to take a photo and assess whether an outfit is office-appropriate before leaving the house.
Amazon states that privacy protections remain unchanged, with camera controls and visual indicators showing when Alexa is actively listening.
Early Access details
The rollout begins today through Alexa+ Early Access in Australia. Customers with compatible Echo devices can register interest via Amazon, and those purchasing eligible new Echo devices can opt in immediately. Amazon plans to invite thousands of Australians to try Alexa+ over the coming weeks.
During Early Access, Alexa+ is free for eligible customers. Once the rollout is complete, it will be included with Amazon Prime membership, and non-Prime customers can subscribe for AU$29.99 per month.
