A 35-year-old man has been charged after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase through Goulburn, reaching speeds of up to 125km/h in 60km/h zones. The man, who was allegedly driving on a suspended learner's licence, was refused bail after his arrest.
Pursuit begins in Goulburn CBD
Police first attempted to stop the man's Holden sedan on Union St in Goulburn about midnight on Sunday. According to police, the driver failed to stop, prompting a pursuit through the Goulburn CBD.
During the chase, the Holden reached speeds of up to 125km/h in areas with a 60km/h speed limit. Police deployed road spikes on Marys Mount Rd, but the vehicle continued, driving through Grafton Street Park onto Grafton St before dropping onto an abandoned train line.
Arrest and charges
The pursuit ended near Sydney Rd, where the driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee into nearby bushland. He was arrested after a foot pursuit and taken to Goulburn Police Station.
During the arrest, police allegedly found a backpack containing drug paraphernalia, which was seized for forensic examination. Police allege the man was driving on a suspended learner's permit.
The man has been charged with police pursuit — not stop — drive at speed and driving while suspended. He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Local Court 3 on Sunday, where bail was again refused. He is due to appear before Goulburn Local Court on August 19.
