At least four people have died following a devastating head-on crash on a remote Northern Territory highway. Emergency services were called on Wednesday afternoon to reports of a collision between two cars on the Stuart Highway near the Marrakai Road turn-off, south-east of Darwin.
Upon arrival, crews found both vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with no surviving occupants. A section of the highway remains closed as Major Crash detectives investigate the circumstances of the collision.
Investigation underway
Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher described the incident as a high-speed head-on collision that ignited both vehicles, making it an extremely complex investigation. He confirmed at least four deaths but noted that formal identification is ongoing due to the extent of the damage.
“At this stage, we have confirmed at least four people have died. However, due to the extent of the damage, we are still working to formally identify the deceased and determine whether there were any additional occupants in either vehicle,” he said.
Vehicles involved
Police have identified one vehicle as a goods van containing one deceased person, and the second as a dual-cab utility with three confirmed deceased. The investigation continues to establish the full circumstances.
Traffic diversions in place
Traffic diversions are in operation, with heavy vehicles unable to pass through the area. Light vehicles are being offered a detour. Motorists are urged to avoid the area or expect significant delays if travelling through.
