Labor MP Ed Husic has avoided serious injury after a car crash on a motorway in western Sydney on Tuesday night.
The Chifley MP was driving home from his electorate office when a truck rear-ended his car at about 80km/h on the M7 motorway. Paramedics at the scene treated him for minor abrasions, fractures and a concussion.
Husic was taken to Westmead Hospital for assessment and was discharged on Wednesday. He is now providing a statement to police.
Gratitude and recovery
In an Instagram post, Husic said he was "extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury" and will take a short period of leave from parliamentary duties to recover fully.
The statement added: "Mr Husic thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedics at Westmead Hospital for providing him with outstanding care and thanked his family and friends for their support, especially during his hospital stay."
Political context
Federal parliament is set to resume on Tuesday after a month-long winter break. Husic, a backbencher, was a minister in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's first term but was removed from the frontbench shortly after the 2025 election in a factional deal.
In July, he used an appearance at Labor's national conference to push for stronger criticism of Israel in the party's platform, but the motion was quashed by factional leaders.
