In a podcast with Wayne Carey, Newman questioned the evidence in the Ralph Carr case, suggesting the victim may have had "buyer's remorse." Carey, himself a Hall of Famer, advised Newman to refrain from commenting without full knowledge.
Integrity and Character Clauses
The Australian Football Hall of Fame's eligibility criteria include "integrity" and "character," not just playing record. In June, Nicky Winmar was removed after assault convictions, and the AFL's statement made clear that conduct prejudicial to the AFL or bringing the game into disrepute can lead to removal.
Newman's history includes giving a platform to neo-Nazis, and his remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from media figures, including Angela Pippos, who called them "predictable, ill-informed and dangerous."

Journalists and celebrities have urged the AFL to cancel Newman, with Christie Whelan stating, "It's not age. It's mentality." The Geelong Football Club's influence and the Hall of Fame secretary's ties to Geelong are seen as obstacles, but many argue inaction would violate the league's own rules.
