An Edge Early Learning centre in Gawler East, north of Adelaide, has been forced to close until 2027 after a child with a known allergy was served meatballs that triggered a severe reaction, leading to hospitalization.
The incident occurred on July 3, shortly after the centre changed food suppliers. The new produce contained soy, an allergen that affected the child. The centre has been closed since July 6 and will not be permitted to reopen before January 20.
Investigation and Extended Closure
Edge Early Learning had initially announced a closure until October, stating it would conduct a full review of its food-handling processes, supplier management, and safety protocols. A spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au that the company would continue to support affected parents and was seeking clarification on why they couldn't reopen in October.
“Edge is writing to the Education Standards Board to seek more information,” the spokesperson said.
However, the Education Standards Board (ESB) confirmed that the extended closure is a result of their investigation into the meatball incident. The ESB stated that a six-month suspension of the service approval is necessary, allowing time for remediation and reflecting the seriousness of the issues identified.
