St Kilda defender Jack Silvagni is determined to face his former club Carlton on Sunday despite dislocating his shoulder in last week's loss to Sydney.
The 28-year-old injured his right shoulder while attempting a diving spoil during the 19-point defeat. He was seen in a sling after the match but is reportedly doing everything possible to be fit for the clash at Marvel Stadium.
Teammate backs Silvagni's recovery
St Kilda co-captain Callum Wilkie expressed confidence in Silvagni's chances, describing him as a "warrior" and a "competitive beast" who has been "amazing" for the team this year.
"He's getting good range of movement each day, so I think he'll be right," Wilkie said on Wednesday. "He's a competitor. He's an absolute warrior. He's been amazing for us this year, and great to play with down back. He's just a competitive beast."
Wilkie added that the final decision rests with the medical staff, but Silvagni is eager to take on his old side.
High-stakes clash for finals hopes
The 11th-placed Saints (9-11) are battling to secure a wildcard berth, and Sunday's match against 10th-placed Carlton (10-10) could prove crucial for both clubs' finals aspirations.
St Kilda have not beaten a top-eight side this season, a trend that has troubled first-year captain Wilkie, who admitted to losing sleep over the team's inconsistencies.
"You lie awake at night trying to figure out solutions of why we're not getting over the line," Wilkie said. "I've probably lost a little bit of sleep over that during the year. But it (being captain) has been great."
Carlton in red-hot form
Carlton enter the match in strong form, having thrashed Brisbane by 76 points last week. That victory marked their ninth win under interim coach Josh Fraser from just 11 games.
Sunday's fixture also carries extra significance as it is the sixth edition of 'Spud's Game', an annual event dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention, honouring late St Kilda legend Danny 'Spud' Frawley.
Double-header with AFLW
The Marvel Stadium match will be a double-header, with St Kilda's AFLW side starting their season against Carlton before the men's game.
"It's an exciting moment for the football club and also for the AFLW as well to have some double headers coming up," said St Kilda AFLW captain Serene Watson. "Especially for the St Kilda football club, that's what we've been asking for, and it's really exciting to play before the men in that."
