Brisbane's first Panda Mart opened over the weekend, drawing hundreds of eager shoppers, but the experience left many feeling "overwhelmed" and disappointed by the state of the store.
The discount store, located in the former Rocklea Bunnings Warehouse, saw lines snaking around the corner as customers waited to get inside. Social media users described it as a "real life Temu", referencing the popular online marketplace.
Chaotic Scenes Inside the Store
Videos shared on social media showed shelves in disarray, with rugs pulled onto the floor and items scattered throughout the aisles. One person said the state of the store was "diabolical", while another described the experience as "a nightmare".
"It’s honestly a bit overwhelming, it’s like you’re shopping in Bunnings, K-mart, Super Cheap Auto, Amazon and Temu all at once," one shopper said.
Free Gift Adds to the Rush
The opening was further fueled by a promise of a free gift for the first 500 customers to make a purchase. Despite the rush, some shoppers were underwhelmed, telling others they were "not missing much".
"It’s a $2 store on steroids," one social media user commented. Another added, "Cars were parked everywhere ... It was an overpriced Temu, it’s the same quality. It’s not worth it."
Some Customers Plan to Return
Despite the criticism, some customers said they would return, enjoying the low prices and wide range of products. Panda Mart, founded in South Africa in 2010, entered the Australian market in 2025, with two stores already operating in Melbourne before this Brisbane opening.
The chain sells items across more than 60 categories, with prices starting from 40c, covering furniture, homewares, kitchen, party supplies, pet accessories, and sports gear.
